(attributed to ''Dizzie Gillespie'' at one of ''Coleman/Cherry'' concert) One of the few prominent figures to emerge from the free jazz 60's scene, ''Don Cherry'' took part in a large number of the important sessions of that era. Eventually recording ''Avant-Guarde'' with ''John Coltrane'', he toured with ''Albert Ayler'', ''Sonny Rollins'' or ''George Russell'', and heavily got mixed with ''Ornette Coleman's'' troup, taking the left channel on ''Free Jazz'' with ''LaFaro'', ''Coleman'' and ''Higgins''. While rooting his play in hard-bop, he experimented with and reused a lot of various influences from ethnic and traditionnal musics. Moving ahead in the 70's, he took part again in a number of landmark records with ''Sun Ra'', ''Roland Kirk'', ''Carla Bley'', not to count his own ''ECM'' records and like-minded ''Dewey Redman's'' sessions. Passed in Spain, his step-daughter and his son would become more famous than him, in very different music genres.
