A major drummer of the hard-bop period, Mr ''Hayes'' recorded both as a leader and as a sideman. Associated with the ''Adderleys'' during the early 60's, he demonstrated he was not limited to bop with adventurous collaborations, with both ''Cecil Taylor'' and ''John Coltrane''. While he can be heard on a consequent number of records, spanning half a century, a very good starter may be one of his very late album, ''Dreamin' of Cannonball'' (TCB).
