Santa María Magdalena is a close suburb of Santiago de Queretaro which is both the capital of the state of Querétaro de Arteaga and the head of the municipality.of Queretaro. The banda started as a social activity at the beginning of the 1990s, and first mainly played religious instrumental music. It was first recorded in 1994. Santa María Magdalena was a place where being a professional musician stayed an exceptional social status. Nevertheless, and conversely with an Urban Legend that pictures members of popular bandas as dilettante musicians, most members had learned music theory since they were children, and were skilled at reading partitions for the instrument they played. A few required that their fellow complete their knowledge, and very few were only "musicians by ears". The banda diversified its activities, moving from the register of community events and "world music events", to the animation of private and social events. In 2005, '''M Antonio García Morales''' became the first singer of the orchestra. In 2011, the orchestra had 19 members, of which only one was a trumpeter woman. It included three clarinets, five trumpets, one tuba, percussions, and valve trombones.
