The band was formed from the ashes of Excoriate, a doom/death metal band formed by four members. Left with nothing but one rehearsal track, Excoriate was soon led to its demise during early 2002 due to major conflicts within the band and later the departure of it's vocalist Ziad Khalil and migration to Birmingham in England. Ahmed Garoon who was the bassist of Excoriate along with Sami Al-Ghouri who was the rhythm guitarist of Excoriate decided to form a two-man project under the name of Dark is the Sun inspired by the song "Dark is the Sunlight" by the Turkish heavy metal band Pentagram. But later they started Mausoleum.
