THE seeds of The Ambassadors of Sorrow were sown around the time of the eclipse, when the world went dark and for a brief moment nothing was quite as it should be. But then… there was light, and it was good. Lead singer Angeline Morrison's head had been fizzing with songs for as long as she could remember, but synchronicity was at hand and it led her to Jess Carter at the Bunker Studios at Goonhilly Downs. Songs were sung and demos were recorded. Then with the twist that fate usually affords, Jess joined the band as its drummer. These melancholy and enchanting tracks eventually became the bands first EP, the brooding Thunder in the Skies. 2004's download-only Loathsome Food EP (released on iTunes through Cornish label Lono Records) saw the addition of lusher melodies, and the limited-edition vinyl 7-inch of Loathsome Food contains their only recorded cover version to date, Francoise Hardy's Le Temps de l'Amour. As the seasons changed, so did the band's dramatic personality with three members leaving for new projects. But with a shake of the phoenix’s tail feather The Ambassadors of Sorrow’s current incarnation rose. With Craig Waite on bass and Nigel Bispham on guitar the band are poised for great things, marked with their first album Easterly being chosen for Apple iTunes’ ‘What we are listening to this week’. But through the mist of harmony and melody, the driving musical influences remain. Wild nature, wild emotions, English gothic folk music and early '60s pop music underscore the soundtrack of the Ambassadors world. Their strange, folk-informed narratives of love, loss and longing have united those who have ever been afflicted by one of nature’s most cruelly divine forces, Love. Their material has been included in soundtracks to a handful of independent films, including cult Cornish surf movie The September Project. It could be said that if the band's personal journal of the last five years could sing, it would sound uncannily like the new album, Easterly.
